Youth who are language minorities in Quebec: using a Bioecological model to examine language development, access to services, and well-being (MLyouth)

We examine the language development, cognitive development, and well-being of 14- to 18-year-old adolescents in Quebec who are, or who are not, on the autism spectrum, and those who are, or who are not minority language speakers.


Researchers: Primary investigator: Dr. Aparna Nadig; Co-Investigators: Dr. Mayada Elsabbagh, Dr. Gigi Luk, Dr. Myriam L. H. Beauchamp, Dr. Elizabeth Allyn Smith


Who can participate: We are seeking participation from adolescents aged 14 to 18 who are either on the autism spectrum or who are neurotypical and who speak French as their first language or in addition to other languages.


What’s involved: The study is conducted entirely in French and includes two visits to our lab in downtown Montreal (metro McGill), each lasting approximately two hours.


Participants will be engaged in a variety of activities, including:

- Completing language tasks

- Watching short videos and providing retellings

- Solving puzzles

- Filling out questionnaires

- Participate in interactive activities


Compensation: Adolescent participants will receive a $25 gift card per visit (a total of $50), and parents/ caregivers will receive a $15 gift card for completing an online questionnaire.

Les jeunes issus d'une minorité linguistique au Québec : utilisation d'un modèle bioécologique pour évaluer le développement de la langue, l'accès aux services et le bien-être (MLyouth)


Nous examinons le développement du langage, le développement cognitif et le bien-être des adolescent⋅e⋅s du Québec, âgés de 14 à 18 ans, autistes ou non autistes, qui parlent français comme langue maternelle (ou en plus d’autres langues).

Who can participate: Nous recherchons des participants adolescents âgés de 14 à 18 ans, autistes ou neurotypiques, qui parlent français comme langue maternelle (ou en plus d’autres langues).


What’s involved: L’étude se fera entièrement en français et comprendra deux visites de deux heures chacune à notre laboratoire situé au centre-ville (métro McGill).


Les participant⋅e⋅s prendront part à diverses activités, notamment :

● Participer à des tâches langagières.

● Regarder des vidéos et les résumer.

● Résoudre des casse-têtes.

● Remplir des questionnaires.

● Participer à des activités interactives.


Compensation: Les participant⋅e⋅s recevront une carte-cadeau de 25 $ par visite (pour un total de 50 $). Leur tuteur sera également invité·e à remplir des questionnaires (en français ou anglais) pour lesquels il·elle recevra une carte-cadeau de 15 $.
